FESTIVALS IN THE DIFFERENT NEIGHBOURHOODS IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

In addition to the already reviewed festivals, other festive activities are organized in Villa de La Orotava neighbourhoods throughout the year. Here you have them in chronological order in case they coincide with your visit and you would like to enjoy them:

 

JANUARY.

            In the last week of this month, the celebrations in honour of San Antonio Abad and Virgen de La Esperanza take place in La Florida. The main events are: Wine contest, election of the Pilgrim Queen, giant stew preparation, popular dance, popular pilgrimage and verbenas.

In La Orotava Historical Centre, an extensive Christmas program takes place in December and January, culminating with the great parade in honour of their majesties the Three Wise Kings.

 

FEBRUARY.

            During the first week, the feast in honour of Virgen de La Candelaria is celebrated in the mid-elevations. The main activities are: procession, verbena, fireworks and horseback riding ring threading competitions.

Carnival is also celebrated In La Perdoma, with the traditional ‘Tío Pepe’ (Uncle Joe) burial and burning ceremony.

In the month of February in La Orotava, as in most of the island's municipalities, carnival is celebrated. This is a festivity that has managed to become a great attraction for visitors and neighbours of the municipality alike.

During the carnival, different acts are scheduled, such as the children's parade and festival, which counts, each year, with a large influx of public and it is definitely a great show.

In addition, you can enjoy other activities such as the ‘murgas’ (satirical singing bands) festival, the old cars rally and the burial of a giant paper doll, popularly known as Crispín. On Tuesday the closing parade or Carnival apotheosis gathers a great number of people from the municipality as well as from the rest of the island; and as a conclusion, the Pinata Ball is celebrated the following Saturday.

 

APRIL.

            During the third week of this month, the celebrations in honour of Virgen de La Candelaria take place in La Candelaria del Lomo. The main events are: procession, variety show, sporting events, games and verbenas.

And between the last week of April and the first week of May, the events in honour of Santo Madero take place in Los Pinos. Festivals, processions, sports events and verbenas are organized.

 

MAY.

            The events in honour of Virgen del Pino take place in the second week of the month, in Camino del Pino (La Perdoma). During this festival you can enjoy a parade, a procession, a festival and verbenas.

            Events to celebrate the day of the Canary Islands are held In the Carmenaty Urbanization on 30th May. Processions, sporting events and fireworks are organized.

 

JULY.

            In the third or fourth week of this month, the celebrations in honour of San Lorenzo Mártir and Virgen de La Candelaria take place in Barroso. The following acts are organized: the election of the queen festival, horseback riding ring threading competitions, verbenas, a procession, sporting events, fireworks.

In Cañeño, celebrations  in honour of Virgen del Carmen and La Santa Cruz (The Holy Cross) take place during the second or third week of the month. Festivals, a livestock exhibition, processions, horseback riding ring threading competitions, sporting events and verbenas.

During the third week, Virgen del Carmen festivals are also celebrated in Barranco de La Arena. You can enjoy the traditional procession and a firework exhibition.

 

AUGUST.

            During the first week of the month, the celebrations of San José Obrero and Santa Teresa de Jesús take place in Aguamansa. The events organized are: festivals, verbenas, processions, a dog exhibition, horseback riding ring threading competitions, cultural and sporting events, fireworks and a pilgrimage.

In the second week, the celebrations in honour of Virgen de La Candelaria are organized in the Mayorazgo Urbanization, in the parish of Santo Domingo, to be more precise. Activities such as the traditional procession, a festival and a firework exhibition are held.

In the second or third week of the month, celebrations in honour of Virgen de La Candelaria, San José Obrero and La Milagrosa are held in Camino de Chasna. The main events are: festivals, a procession, cultural and sporting events, livestock exhibition, a parade and verbenas.

In Bebedero Alto, during the second week of this month, the celebrations in honour of San Agustín and San Roque take place. Activities such as festivals, processions, cultural and sporting events, pilgrimages and verbenas are organized.

In the third week, celebrations in honour of Virgen de La Candelaria also take place in La Vera. The activities are: festivals, processions, cultural and sporting events, fireworks and verbenas.

During the last week of the month, La Florida celebrates a festival with cultural and sporting events, a gymkhana, a car slalom, ‘lucha canaria’ (traditional Canary Islands’ wrestling), a street market, a procession and verbenas.

In this last week, Pinolere hosts the celebrations in honour of Santa María de la Cabeza and El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. The activities are: festivals, horseback riding ring threading competitions, a procession, cultural and sporting events, fireworks and verbenas.

 

SEPTEMBER.

            During the first week, a craft fair and a popular pilgrimage take place in Pinolere.

In La Luz, during the second week, the celebrations in honour of Virgen de La Luz are held. Activities such as festivals, processions, fireworks and verbenas are organized.

Also in the second week, the events in honour of Santa Maria de La Cabeza and San Isidro Labrador take place in Benijos. The main events are: festivals, a livestock fair and exhibition, a pilgrimage, a clay pigeon shooting, horseback riding ring threading competitions, fireworks and verbenas.

Celebrations in honour of La Cruz Chica, San Antonio de Padua and Virgen de Guadalupe are held in Colombo during the third week of the month, with festivals, processions, cultural and sporting events and verbenas.

Also in the third week, Pino Alto organizes the celebrations in honour of Virgen del Pino and Santo Tomás, with such events as: festivals, processions, cultural and sporting events and verbenas.

In that same week, in La Piedad, a procession and a firework exhibition in honour of Virgen de La Piedad take place.

During the fourth week, in Bebedero Alto, the festivals in honour of San Agustín and San Roque are held. In these festivities the main activities are: festivals, processions, fireworks, a pilgrimage and verbenas.

Between the fourth week of September and the first week of October, the district of San Miguel celebrates the festivities in honour of San Miguel Arcángel, with festivals, a parade, cultural and sporting events, a procession and verbenas.

 

OCTOBER.

In the first week, the district of La Perdoma celebrates the festivities of Nuestra Señora del Rosario and San Jerónimo, with festivals, the harvest festival, cultural and sporting events, processions, a popular race, fireworks and verbenas.

Already in the third week, in San Antonio, the San Antonio María Claret festivities are organized and different activities take place: festivals, cultural and sporting events, processions and verbenas.
