7 Casa Benítez de las Cuevas

Casa Benítez de las Cuevas 1

This residence was built in the seventeenth century by Bartolomé Benítez de las Cuevas on the site left by the demolition of a structure erected in the sixteenth century. After marrying Catalina María de Ponte he commissioned this imposing building at the intersection of two streets delimited by the sloping terrain, more evident on calle Colegio. The expressive corner has a certain uniqueness because of its situation, its V-shaped plan generating an unusual arrangement. The irregularity of the façade’s windows and doors is evidence of the different uses of the building over time; likewise the crest over the central axis, added later. The only overhanging element is the balcony of the middle section, a platform with a grillwork balustrade on wooden corbels.
